How this calculator works
The waste factor is a percentage added to your measured area before ordering. Ten percent is the floor, not a safety margin — that is roughly what a straight layout in a plain rectangular room genuinely consumes in perimeter cuts.
Add to the base 10% for: diagonal layouts (+5), herringbone or chevron (+10), rooms with lots of jogs, closets and columns (+3 to +6), and small bathrooms where almost every tile touches a wall (+4). A first-time DIYer should add another 5% for learning-curve breakage. Hexagon tile sits at about 15% too, because every wall cuts the honeycomb into part-hexes.
Always keep attic stock. Set aside 2% — at least one full box — in a dry place. Tile runs change constantly and dye lots shift between production batches, so a cracked tile two years from now is either a matched spare or a visible patch.
- Buy all tile in one order so every box is the same dye lot.
- Check the lot number on every box before the delivery driver leaves.
- Open and inspect boxes — 1–2% arrive chipped and are usually returnable.
- Most stores accept unopened box returns; confirm the window before ordering.

How much extra tile should I buy?
10% for a straight layout in a simple room, 15% for diagonal, 20% for herringbone or chevron, plus 2% held back as attic stock for future repairs.
Is 10% waste enough for tile?
For a plain rectangular room with a grid layout, yes. Small bathrooms, complex floor plans and pattern layouts all need more.
Can I return unopened boxes of tile?
Most retailers accept unopened, undamaged boxes within 30–90 days. Special-order and clearance tile is usually final sale — check before you buy extra.
What is attic stock?
Spare tile kept after the job for future repairs. Keep at least one full box from the same dye lot; matching tile years later is nearly impossible.
