Tile Baseboard Calculator

A tile baseboard is a row of tile along the bottom of the wall — cut from the floor tile so it matches, or bought as ready-made cove base or bullnose pieces. Enter the room and the doorways to get the linear feet, then either the floor tiles to cut into strips at your baseboard height or the base pieces to buy.

Tile baseboard in a bathroom

Tile base is popular in bathrooms because it shrugs off mop water and toilet splashes that swell wood or MDF trim. Set it on the wall with thin-set over drywall or backer board, sitting on the floor tile with the grout lines lined up if the sizes allow. Put the factory edge on top, or finish a cut top edge with a bullnose piece or a metal profile — the bullnose tile calculator and the tile edge trim calculator count those.

Fill the joint between the base and the floor with flexible caulk rather than grout: it is a change of plane, which the TCNA Handbook's movement-joint detail (EJ171) treats as a movement joint. Color-matched caulk makes it disappear.

How this calculator works

Linear feet. Perimeter = 2 × (length + width). Subtract each doorway (the base stops at the casing). That is the run of baseboard.

Pieces. Pieces = ceil((run + joint) ÷ (piece length + joint)), then add waste. Each outside corner needs its two pieces mitred, or a corner piece.

Cut from floor tile. A saw cut takes about 1/8 in, so a tile of width W gives floor((W + 1/8) ÷ (height + 1/8)) strips, each as long as the tile. Strips needed = ceil((run + joint) ÷ (tile length + joint)) plus waste; tiles = strips ÷ strips per tile, rounded up.

Worked example. A 12 × 10 ft room has a 44 ft perimeter; less one 36 in door, 41 ft of base. In 12 in base pieces with 1/8 in joints that is 41 pieces, 46 with 10% waste. Cut 4 in high from 12 × 24 tile, each tile gives 2 strips (a third would need 12.25 in), so 24 strips take 12 tiles. Cut at 3-7/8 in instead, each tile gives 3 and 8 tiles do it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate tile baseboard?

Measure the room's perimeter, subtract the doorways, and divide by the piece length plus the grout joint. A 12 × 10 ft room with one 36 in door needs 41 ft of base: 41 twelve-inch pieces, 46 with 10% waste.

Can I make baseboard from floor tile?

Yes — rip the floor tile into strips on a wet saw. A 12 in wide tile gives two 4 in strips or three 3-7/8 in strips, because each cut takes about 1/8 in. Put the factory edge on top or cap the cut edge with trim.

How tall should tile baseboard be?

Usually 3 to 6 in. Pick a height that divides your tile width with little waste — 3-7/8 in or 5-7/8 in from 12 in tile — or match the height of the wood base in the rest of the house.

Should tile baseboard be grouted or caulked at the floor?

Caulked. The joint between the base and the floor is a change of plane, which tile industry guidance treats as a movement joint; grout there tends to crack.

Is tile baseboard good in a bathroom?

Yes. It doesn't swell or rot when it gets wet, it wipes clean and it can match the floor exactly. It costs more than wood trim and takes longer to install.
