Epoxy Calculator

Epoxy is sold by volume, so the question is always how many gallons (or ounces, or liters) of mixed resin the job takes. For a pour, that is the mold's length × width × depth; for a coating, the floor area × the film thickness. Enter yours and the calculator converts the volume, adds a margin for what stays in the cup and on the roller, and splits it into resin and hardener at your kit's mix ratio.

Theoretical coverage assumes a smooth, sealed surface. Bare, porous concrete drinks the first coat, so most floor systems start with a thin primer; the product sheet gives the film thickness it expects for each coat. Tiling the floor instead? Compare with the floor tile calculator, level a rough slab first with the self-leveling calculator, and note that epoxy grout is a different product — the epoxy grout calculator sizes it by the joint.

How this calculator works

Pour. Volume = length × width × depth (or π × diameter² ÷ 4 × depth for a round top), all in inches, times the number of pieces. A US gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches and 128 fluid ounces (NIST Handbook 44); a cubic inch is 16.387 mL.

Coating. Volume per coat = area (sq ft) × 144 × wet film thickness in mils ÷ 1,000. One gallon spread 1 mil thick covers 1,604 sq ft, so at 10 mils it covers about 160.4 sq ft. The dry film is the wet film × the product's volume solids — 100% solids epoxy dries as thick as it goes on.

Mix ratio. The label gives resin : hardener by volume (often 1:1 or 2:1). The mixed total is split in that proportion. If your kit gives a ratio by weight, follow the label and weigh it instead.

Worked example. A 48 × 24 in table top with a 1/8 in flood coat is 48 × 24 × 0.125 = 144 cu in = 0.62 gal (79.8 fl oz, 2.36 L); with 10% extra, 0.69 gal — a 1 gal kit at 1:1 is 0.34 gal of each part.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much epoxy I need?

Multiply length × width × depth in inches for cubic inches, then divide by 231 for US gallons (× 128 for fluid ounces). A 48 × 24 in table top poured 1/8 in deep is 144 cu in = 0.62 gal, or 79.8 fl oz. Add about 10% for what stays in the cup.

How much epoxy do I need for a river table?

Work out the river's volume, not the whole table's: a river 72 in long, 6 in wide on average and 1.5 in deep is 648 cu in = 2.81 gal. Deep pours usually have to go in several layers, so check the resin's maximum pour depth.

How much epoxy do I need for a garage floor?

Area × wet film thickness. 400 sq ft at 10 mils is 400 × 144 × 0.010 = 576 cu in, about 2.5 gal per coat (one gallon covers about 160 sq ft at 10 mils). Two coats is about 5 gal before waste; the product sheet gives the thickness each coat should be.

How many square feet does a gallon of epoxy cover?

1,604 sq ft at 1 mil, so divide 1,604 by the wet film thickness in mils: 160 sq ft at 10 mils, 100 sq ft at 16 mils. At 1/8 in (125 mils) a gallon covers just under 13 sq ft.

How do I split epoxy by mix ratio?

Divide the total by the parts. At 2:1 by volume, 3 gal of mixed epoxy is 2 gal of resin and 1 gal of hardener; at 1:1 it is half and half. Mix only what you can use within the product's pot life.
