Regrout, clean, or retile?
Before paying for a regrout, clean one square foot properly — an alkaline grout cleaner and a stiff brush, or a steam cleaner. A surprising amount of “failed” grout is only dirty, and a colorant or sealer after cleaning costs a fraction of regrouting. Regrout when grout is cracked, sandy, missing or stained right through.
Retile when the problem is behind the tile. Press on the tiles and tap them with a screwdriver handle: movement or a hollow sound means the bond has failed, and in a shower that usually means water has reached the backer board. New grout would only seal the moisture in.
Cement or epoxy for the new grout
Epoxy grout is stain-proof, never needs sealing and is the better choice for shower floors and kitchen counters. It costs more — roughly 35% more to have installed in this model — and is less forgiving to work with, because it has to be washed off the tile face before it cures. A good polymer-modified cement grout, sealed after it cures, is fine for most walls.
Published 2026 figures
Homewyse's September 2026 model puts basic shower regrouting at about $16–$35 per square foot (polymer-modified grout, professional labor, 10 sq ft minimum). That is what this calculator returns for 3×6 and 4×4 shower tile; for 12×12 and larger floor tile the per-foot price falls because there is far less joint to cut out. Consumer cost guides for 2026 put a typical shower regrout at roughly $600–$2,500 (about $1,500 on average); full-height showers in small tile land at the top of that range or above it.

How this calculator works
Joint length. In a grid, each W×L tile owns one W-long joint and one L-long joint, so every square foot of tile carries 12/W + 12/L feet of grout line. That is 2 ft for 12×12 tile, 6 ft for 3×6 subway, 12 ft for a 2×2 mosaic and 24 ft for a 1 in mosaic.
Pro price. The two base rates ($6–$12 per sq ft by default) are what a pro charges for 12×12 tile. The calculator scales them by joint density, from 0.75× for large tile up to a cap of 4× for mosaics, then adds 35% for epoxy grout and $1–$2 per sq ft to seal cement grout. Small jobs carry a minimum visit ($250–$450 here) because the setup and cure time are the same whatever the size.
DIY. New grout is sized with the same joint-volume method as the grout calculator, filling about two-thirds of the tile thickness (the depth you should remove). Cement grout is priced in 10 lb bags at $18–$30, epoxy in roughly 9 lb kits at $55–$90, plus $25–$130 of tools. Time assumes 15–30 linear feet of joint an hour with an oscillating tool, cleaning and regrouting included.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to regrout a shower?
For a typical alcove shower in 3x6 or 4x4 tile (about 80–100 sq ft of wall), expect roughly $1,500–$3,800 with a pro in cement grout (sealed), more with epoxy. Showers in 12x24 tile cost a fraction of that. DIY, the materials and tools are usually under $200 — the cost is two or three weekends of your time.
Why is regrouting small tile so much more expensive?
Because the work is removing and refilling grout line, and small tile has far more of it. A square foot of 1 inch mosaic has 24 ft of joint; a square foot of 12x24 tile has 1.5 ft.
When should I regrout instead of retile?
Regrout when the tile is firmly bonded and the grout is cracked, crumbling, missing or permanently stained. If tiles are loose, sound hollow when tapped, or the wall behind is soft or wet, regrouting will not fix it — the shower needs rebuilding.
Do I have to remove all the old grout?
Remove at least two-thirds of the depth, or 1/8 inch at a minimum, so the new grout has enough body to bond. Grouting over old grout in a thin skim is the reason most DIY regrouts crack again within a year.
