Epoxy vs cement grout
Epoxy grout is resin and hardener with a filler, not cement. It will not stain, needs no sealer and stands up to acids and cleaners, which is why it is used in showers, kitchen backsplashes, commercial kitchens and on light-colored grout that would otherwise darken. The trade-offs are price, a short working time and a cleanup that has to happen before it cures. Tips for working with epoxy grout
- Work in areas of 20–30 sq ft and keep the mixed batch in a shallow tray so it stays cool.
- Pack joints on the diagonal with a hard rubber float, then clean with the kit's pads and clean water.
- Change the rinse water often — epoxy haze left on the tile is very hard to remove once cured.
- Keep it off unsealed natural stone and porous tile surfaces unless the maker says otherwise.

How this calculator works
Each tile sits in a repeating cell of (tile width + joint) × (tile length + joint). The joint area in that cell times the joint depth (a full joint = the tile thickness) is the grout volume per tile; scaled to a square foot and multiplied by epoxy's density (~125 lb per cubic foot, heavier than cement grout) it gives pounds.
- 12×12×3/8 in tile, 1/8 in joint: 1.11 cu in per sq ft → 0.08 lb/sq ft → 8 lb per 100 sq ft
- 2×2 mosaic, 1/8 in joint, 1/4 in thick: about 30 lb per 100 sq ft — nearly 4× as much
The waste allowance (15% by default) covers what is left on the float, the haze and the part of a batch that stiffens before you use it. Kit size is on the label: many full units are around 9 lb and minis 2–3 lb, but check yours — the coverage per kit is computed from the weight you enter.

How much epoxy grout do I need per square foot?
It depends almost entirely on tile size. 12x12 floor tile with 1/8 in joints takes about 0.08 lb per sq ft (8 lb per 100 sq ft). 3x6 subway with 1/8 in joints is about 0.19 lb, and 1x1 mosaic passes 0.5 lb per sq ft.
How many square feet does a 9 lb epoxy grout kit cover?
About 112 sq ft of 12x12 x 3/8 in tile with 1/8 in joints, about 46 sq ft of 3x6 subway, and only about 16 sq ft of 1x1 mosaic. Use the calculator above for your tile — coverage changes several-fold with tile size.
Do you need to seal epoxy grout?
No. Cured epoxy grout is non-porous, so it does not absorb stains or water and needs no sealer. That is the main reason people pay more for it in showers and kitchens.
How long do you have to work with epoxy grout?
Typically 45 to 60 minutes at room temperature, less when it is warm. Mix a partial batch only if the manufacturer allows it, grout one small area at a time and clean the haze before it sets.
