Reporting a calculation that looks wrong
Please send:
- The page address (for example, smarttilecalculator.com/grout-calculator).
- Every number and option you entered: room size, tile size, joint width, waste %, box size.
- The result you got, and the result you expected or that your supplier gave you.
With those we can reproduce your exact calculation. If our formula is wrong we fix it and add a test so the same mistake can't come back. If the difference comes from an input (a different box size or waste allowance, for instance) we'll explain which one.
Reporting a display or site problem
- Your device and browser (for example, iPhone with Safari, or Windows with Chrome).
- The page it happened on, and what you tapped or typed just before.
- A screenshot if you can take one.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the calculator give more tiles than my floor area divides into?
Because it adds a waste allowance before dividing, then rounds up to whole tiles and whole boxes. Cuts at walls, doorways and around fixtures use up tile, and a few break. A straight grid defaults to 10% extra; diagonal and herringbone layouts need 15–20%.
My result is different from the tile store's number. Which is right?
Usually both are close and the difference is the waste percentage or the box size. Check that the tiles per box (or square feet per box) you entered matches the carton you're buying, and that both of you used the same waste allowance.
Why does the grout estimate change so much with joint width?
Grout fills the joints, so the amount scales with joint width and depth and with how many joints there are. Small tiles have far more joints per square foot than large ones: a 2x2 mosaic can take several times the grout of 12x12 tile over the same area.
Do I need to enter my tile thickness?
For grout, yes, because joint depth is usually close to tile thickness. If you leave it at the default, the estimate assumes a typical 3/8 inch tile.
Are the prices in the cost calculators current?
They are typical U.S. ranges, not live store prices, and they drift over time. Use them to sense-check a budget, then replace them with the prices on your own quotes. If a range looks clearly out of date, tell us.
Where are my saved estimates?
On the device and browser you saved them in, under My Estimates. They are not uploaded anywhere, so they won't appear on another device, and clearing your browser data or using a private window removes them.
Can I use the results to quote a customer?
Yes, the calculators are free to use for your own jobs and for quoting. You remain responsible for checking the quantities against the actual site and products.
Is there an app?
Yes, Smart Tile Calculator is available free on Google Play for Android.
What we cannot do
