Choosing the Right Tile Size for Your Room
How tile size changes a room: when 12×24 beats 4×4, why small rooms can take large tile, grout line math, and the flatness rule for big formats.

Big tile, small room — yes, it works
The old rule said small rooms need small tile. Modern practice goes the other way: large-format tile in a small bathroom means fewer grout lines to interrupt the eye, and the room reads bigger. A 12 × 24 in a 5 × 8 bath looks clean and current.
The real constraint isn't room size, it's cuts. If your room is 7 ft wide and your tile is 24 in, you'll get 3.5 tiles across — meaning one full-width cut per row. Check that the cut piece lands somewhere sensible, like under the vanity.
The flatness rule you can't ignore
Any tile with an edge of 15 inches or longer demands a floor flat within 1/8 inch over 10 feet. Standard tile tolerates 1/4 inch. Big tile bridges hollows in the slab, rocks underfoot, and shows lippage — one edge sitting higher than its neighbor.
Lay a 10-ft straightedge (or a long level) across the floor in several directions. If you can slide a pencil under it anywhere, budget for self-leveling compound before you budget for large-format tile.

Grout lines are part of the design
Tile size sets grout line count, and grout lines are visual texture. An 8 × 8 grid of 12-inch tiles in a 100 sq ft room has roughly 130 linear feet of grout; the same room in 4-inch mosaics has over 700 feet. More grout means more cleaning and more visual noise.
If you love the look of small tile but hate grout, use a grout color that matches the tile closely — the lines recede and the surface reads as one plane.
Practical sizing by space
There's no wrong answer, but these pairings rarely fail:
- Small bathrooms and powder rooms: 12 × 24 floors, subway or 4 × 12 walls
- Kitchens: 12 × 24 or 18 × 18 floors; subway or 3 × 12 backsplash
- Large open floors: 24 × 24 or 24 × 48 if the slab is flat
- Shower floors: 2-inch mosaic or smaller — you need the grout lines for slope and grip

Does bigger tile cost more to install?
Usually yes — large-format tile needs a flatter substrate, a leveling clip system, and often two people to set. Expect labor to run $1–3 per sq ft more than standard sizes.
Can I use large tile on a shower floor?
Avoid it. Shower floors slope to the drain, and large tiles can't follow the slope without being cut into pie shapes. Stick to 2 × 2 mosaics or smaller on the pan.
What tile size makes a small room look bigger?
Counterintuitively, larger tile (12 × 24 or 18 × 18) with tight, color-matched grout lines makes small rooms feel larger by reducing visual clutter.
