Planning a fireplace tile layout
Lay the tile out dry on the floor first. Center the header on the opening, then size the legs so each ends in a full tile or a clean half — slivers next to the firebox are the first thing people notice. With 3×6 subway or 2×8 zellige, a vertical stack on the legs and a horizontal run on the header is a classic look that also hides small differences in leg width.
Heat, clearances and the substrate
Tile itself is non-combustible, but the wall behind it may not be. Follow the clearances in your fireplace or insert manual for combustible trim and mantels, and set the tile on cement board, masonry or a properly skim-coated brick face — not on painted drywall right at the firebox edge. Leave the grout to cure for a few days before the first fire.

How this calculator works
Surround area = (opening width + 2 × leg width) × (opening height + header height) − opening width × opening height. The hearth, if any, is its width × depth. Both are added and your waste allowance applied (15% is typical: small area, many cuts, and the corners of the opening).
- 36 × 30 in opening, 8 in legs, 12 in header: 52 × 42 − 36 × 30 = 1,104 sq in = 7.7 sq ft
- Add a 60 × 20 in hearth: +8.3 sq ft = 16 sq ft in all
Edge trim counts the outer edge (both sides and the top) and the three edges of the opening, plus 10%. Labor is priced per square foot with a minimum charge ($350–$600), because a fireplace is a small job that still takes most of a day: layout, many cuts, and working in a finished room. Tear-out of existing tile or a stone veneer adds $200–$500.

How much tile do I need for a fireplace surround?
Usually 6–15 sq ft. A 36 x 30 in firebox with 8 in of tile on each side and 12 in above it is about 7.7 sq ft; add 15% for cuts, so buy about 9 sq ft. Wider legs, a taller header or a hearth add quickly.
How much does it cost to tile a fireplace?

What tile can go around a fireplace?
Porcelain, ceramic, natural stone and cement or zellige tile all handle the heat of a surround. Avoid glass tile and peel-and-stick right at the firebox edge; keep combustibles to the clearances your fireplace manual gives. Use a modified thinset rated for the substrate.
Can you tile over existing fireplace tile or brick?
Over sound, well-bonded tile, yes — scuff it, clean it and use a modified thinset, and check the extra thickness still clears the mantel and the firebox trim. Over brick, fill the mortar joints flat (or skim-coat) first so the new tile is not rocking on the brick faces.
