Laminate Flooring Calculator

Laminate is sold by the box, so the number that matters is boxes. Measure the room, add 10% for cuts and closets, and divide by the coverage printed on the box: a 15 × 12 ft room is 180 sq ft, 198 sq ft with waste, which is 11 boxes of 19.63 sq ft. The calculator also gives planks, underlayment rolls and trim, in feet or metres.

How this calculator works

Boxes = room area × (1 + waste) ÷ box coverage, rounded up. Planks = the same area ÷ the area of one plank (width × length ÷ 144). Underlayment covers the room itself, without the cutting waste, and trim (quarter round or baseboard) runs the room perimeter minus about 3 ft for each doorway.

Waste depends on the layout. A straight run in a plain rectangular room wastes about 5–8%, because the offcut from one row starts the next. Closets, hallways and random end joints push it to 10%, a diagonal layout to 15%, and herringbone to 20%.

  • Leave an expansion gap at every wall, usually about 1/4 in (6 mm); the trim covers it. Check the maker's instructions.
  • Let the boxes acclimate in the room for the time the maker specifies, often 48 hours, before you open them.
  • Keep one spare box for repairs; the same colour batch can be impossible to find later.

Frequently asked questions

How many boxes of laminate flooring do I need?

Multiply the room's length by its width, add 10% for waste, and divide by the square feet on the box. A 15 × 12 ft room is 180 sq ft, 198 sq ft with waste, so 11 boxes at 19.63 sq ft each.

How much extra laminate should I buy?

About 7% for a simple rectangular room, 10% with closets or a random stagger, 15% for a diagonal layout and 20% for herringbone.

How many square feet are in a box of laminate?

Usually 15 to 25 sq ft (about 1.4 to 2.3 m²), depending on the thickness and plank size. Thicker 12 mm laminate has less per box. Use the figure printed on the box you are buying.

Do I need underlayment under laminate?

Floating laminate needs a foam or felt underlayment unless it has one attached. Over concrete, use one with a vapour barrier. A roll usually covers 100 sq ft.

How do I calculate laminate in square metres?

Switch the units to metres. A 4.5 × 3.6 m room is 16.2 m², 17.8 m² with 10% waste, which is 10 boxes of 1.82 m².
