How this calculator works
Area is width × height in feet, minus the cut-outs you enter (a standard outlet cover is so small it rounds to nothing — enter windows and range hoods here). Each piece covers its face size: 10×10 inches is 100 ÷ 144 = 0.69 sq ft, 12×12 is exactly 1 sq ft, and a 4×12 subway strip is only 0.33 sq ft. There is no grout joint to add, because the sheets butt or overlap edge to edge.
Waste is 10% on a straight run, 15% when a printed pattern — marble veining, a mosaic — has to line up from sheet to sheet, and 20% for diagonal or herringbone layouts. Tiles are rounded up to whole pieces and packs.

Yes, if the old tile is flat, clean and sound. Deep grout lines telegraph through thin vinyl, so skim-coat them flush first, degrease the surface, and prime glossy glazes if the maker recommends it.
Can peel and stick tile go in a shower?
Not where water hits it directly. Most products are rated for backsplashes and bathroom walls outside the spray zone; steam and standing water break down the adhesive. Use real tile over a waterproof membrane inside a shower.
Is peel and stick cheaper than real tile?
Usually, once labor is counted. Sheets run about $1.50–$5 each and need no thinset, grout, backer board or installer, while installed ceramic backsplash commonly runs $20 or more per sq ft.
