How to Tile a Shower Floor: Slope, Mosaic and Drain Details

Why shower pans need small tile, how to follow the 1/4-in-per-foot slope, cutting around the drain, and sealing the pan before the first tile sticks.

Why pan tile is small tile

A shower floor slopes toward the drain at 1/4 inch per foot, and tile has to follow that slope without tenting or lippage. Anything bigger than about 2 × 2 inches can't bend to the slope — it bridges low spots, rocks, and puddles water at the edges.

Mesh-mounted 1- and 2-inch mosaics exist precisely for this: the mesh holds pattern and spacing while each small tile follows the pan's contour. On the pan, small isn't a style choice — it's physics.

Confirm the slope before you tile

Set a level from the drain to each corner and check the drop. You want a consistent 1/4 inch per foot in every direction. A pan that ponded water before tile will pond water after tile — only harder to fix.

If the slope is off, a skim of deck mud (dry-pack mortar) can re-shape it before you tile. This is the last cheap moment to correct drainage.

The drain is the detail that matters

Cut mosaic around the drain so individual tiles — not grout joints — meet the drain flange; it looks intentional and seals better. Many mosaic sheets are sized so the drain cutout lands cleanly if you dry-lay from the drain outward.

Keep the weep holes in a two-piece drain clear of thinset. Those holes drain water that migrates through the grout into the mortar bed — plug them and the pan becomes a slow bathtub under your tile.

Set, cure, seal

Use white modified thinset under light or translucent stone and glass mosaics (gray can shadow through), press sheets with a grout float instead of your hands for even embedment, and keep traffic off the pan for 48–72 hours.

Once grout has cured, seal the pan even if the tile is porcelain — the grout is what's porous. A penetrating sealer on the pan grout is cheap insurance on the wettest square footage in your house.

FAQ

Can I use 4×4 tile on a shower floor?

Only on very large, gently sloped pans, and even then 2×2 follows the slope better. The bigger the tile, the more cuts and lippage you'll fight at the drain.

Do mosaic sheets need back-buttering?

Usually not individually, but press each sheet firmly with a float so every tile embeds in the mortar. Lift a sheet early on to confirm coverage before continuing.

Why is my shower floor grout always discolored?

Standing water plus soap film. Re-check the slope for ponding, seal the grout, and squeegee after showers. Persistent dark grout lines usually mean the pan holds water somewhere.
