Best Thinset Mortar for Porcelain and Large Tile
Which mortar suits your tile and substrate, the standard codes to read on the bag, and how many bags your floor takes.

Thinset is the cement-based mortar that bonds tile to the floor or wall. For dense porcelain and most modern installs, a polymer-modified mortar meeting ANSI A118.15 (or at least A118.4) is the usual choice; large-format tile wants a mortar made for large and heavy tile (LHT) that does not slump.

How many bags you need
Coverage per bag depends on the trowel notch: bigger notches for bigger tile. The thinset calculator uses these coverages; the example runs the same function.
Worked example: A 150 sq ft floor
- 12 × 24 tile with a 1/4 × 3/8 in square notch: about 75 sq ft per 50 lb bag → 2 bags
- Adding about 15% for back-buttering → 3 bags
- 24 × 48 tile with a 1/2 × 1/2 in square notch: about 45 sq ft per bag → 4 bags
3 bags for 12 × 24 tile, or 4 bags of large-format mortar for 24 × 48 — large tile needs a bigger notch, so more mortar per square foot.
Reading the bag
- ANSI A118.1 = basic unmodified; A118.4 = modified; A118.11 = for plywood; A118.15 = improved modified (the strongest common rating).
- LHT or non-sag: needed for large and heavy tile.
- Substrate list: cement board, concrete, plywood, membranes — check yours is named.
- Membrane compatibility: some sheet membranes specify unmodified mortar; follow the membrane maker.
- Colour: white mortar for glass and light stone that could show grey through.

- Wet mortar is alkaline and can burn skin — wear waterproof gloves and wash off splashes promptly.
- Lift 50 lb bags with your legs, and mix at low speed to avoid splatter.

What is the best thinset for porcelain tile?
A polymer-modified thinset rated ANSI A118.15 (or at least A118.4). For tiles with a side of 15 inches or more, use a large-and-heavy-tile (LHT) mortar.
Modified or unmodified thinset?
Modified for most porcelain installs. Unmodified is specified by some sheet membranes and for certain substrates — follow the membrane or tile maker. Our modified vs unmodified guide explains when.
How many bags of thinset do I need?
Divide the area by the bag coverage for your trowel notch — about 75 sq ft per 50 lb bag with a 1/4 × 3/8 in notch — and add for back-buttering. Our thinset calculator works it out.
Can I use premixed adhesive on a floor?
Generally no. Premixed adhesives suit small wall tile in dry areas; floors, showers and large tile need a cement-based mortar.
What trowel size for 12 × 24 tile?
Commonly a 1/4 × 3/8 in or 1/2 × 1/2 in square notch, with back-buttering. Lift a tile to check you have full coverage.
