How this calculator works
Planks needed = (area × waste) ÷ plank coverage. A 7"×48" plank covers 2.33 sq ft, so a 180 sq ft room at 10% waste needs 198 sq ft, or 85 planks, or 9 boxes at 24 sq ft per box.
Waste depends on the layout. A straight plank layout in a rectangular room wastes about 5–8%. Add 10% for a staggered pattern with random start lengths, 15% for a diagonal layout, and 20% for herringbone LVP.
- Click-lock LVP floats over the subfloor with a 1/4" expansion gap at every wall. It is the most forgiving install and the easiest to remove.
- Glue-down LVT is thinner, more stable in wide open rooms and in sunlight, and required in most commercial settings.
- Peel and stick is the cheapest, works over clean flat vinyl or plywood, but needs a spotless, primed surface or it lifts at the corners.

Frequently asked questions
How many boxes of vinyl plank do I need?
Divide your room square footage by the coverage printed on the box, then add 10% waste and round up. A 200 sq ft room with 24 sq ft boxes needs 10 boxes.
How much waste for luxury vinyl plank?
5–8% for a plain rectangular room, 10% for staggered layouts with closets and doorways, 15–20% for diagonal or herringbone.
Does peel and stick tile need underlayment?
No underlayment, but the subfloor must be clean, dry, flat and primed. Any grit or old adhesive under the tile shows through and causes lifting.
Can vinyl plank go over existing tile?
Yes, if the tile is well bonded and the grout lines are filled with a levelling compound. Unfilled grout lines telegraph through thin LVP within months.
