How this calculator works
The joint has a job. It absorbs the tiny size variation between tiles — that is called caliber — and it lets the floor flex slightly without cracking. Squeeze the joint too tight for the tile and every size difference shows as a wobble in the grout line.
- 1/16 in: rectified porcelain, subway tile, mosaics. Crisp modern look; requires unsanded grout and a very flat substrate.
- 1/8 in: the safe default for most floor tile and all large-format. Works with sanded grout.
- 3/16 in: ceramic with variable edges, rustic looks.
- 1/4 in: outdoor patio, pool decks, saltillo and handmade tile that needs the movement.
Sanded vs unsanded: use unsanded grout at 1/8 in and below — sand will not pack into a narrow joint. Use sanded grout at 1/8 in and above; unsanded shrinks and cracks in wide joints. At exactly 1/8 in either works, so follow the grout bag.
How many spacers: roughly four per tile for a grid layout, plus 10% for losses. Cross spacers work in a grid; use T-spacers for offset and brick-bond layouts, and wedge-style leveling clips for anything 15 inches or longer.

Frequently asked questions
What size tile spacer should I use?
1/16 in for rectified porcelain, subway and mosaic; 1/8 in for most floor and large-format tile; 1/4 in for outdoor and handmade tile.
Can I tile with no grout joint at all?
No. Even rectified tile needs a minimum 1/16 in joint to absorb size variation and movement. Butt-jointed tile cracks and lips.
Sanded or unsanded grout?
Unsanded at 1/8 in and below, sanded at 1/8 in and above. Sanded grout can scratch polished marble and glass — use unsanded or an epoxy grout there.
How many tile spacers do I need?
About four per tile plus 10% spare. A 200 sq ft floor in 12x24 tile takes roughly 440 spacers.
Do I remove spacers before grouting?
Yes — pull them once the mortar has set, usually after a few hours. Never grout over spacers left flat in the joint.
