How this calculator works
Waterline tile: pool perimeter × band height. A 16 × 32 ft pool has a 96 ft perimeter; a standard 6" band is 0.5 ft tall, so you tile 48 sq ft. Add 12% waste for corner and step cuts.
Patios and pool decks: straight area × waste. Outdoors you want 12–15% because slopes for drainage force more cuts than a flat interior floor.
Garage tile: interlocking PVC or polypropylene tiles are usually 12x12 or 24x24 and simply snap together over the slab. Waste is low — 5–8% — because the tiles cut with a utility knife or jigsaw.
- Use only frost-proof tile with under 0.5% water absorption in freezing climates.
- Outdoor tile needs a DCOF of 0.42 or higher for wet-area slip resistance.
- Slope decks 1/4" per foot away from the pool and the house.
- Use exterior-rated thinset and epoxy or high-performance grout at the waterline.

The perimeter is 96 linear feet. A 6 inch band is 48 sq ft; add 12% waste and order about 54 sq ft.
What size tile is used for a pool waterline?
6x6 tiles and 1x1 or 2x2 glass mosaic sheets are standard. Sheets follow curved pool walls far better than large tiles.
Can regular tile be used outdoors?
Only porcelain rated frost-proof with low water absorption. Standard ceramic absorbs water, freezes and spalls within a season or two in cold climates.
How many interlocking tiles for a 2-car garage?
A 20x20 ft garage is 400 sq ft — 400 tiles at 12x12, or 100 tiles at 24x24, plus about 5% for edge cuts and ramp edging.
