How this calculator works
Floor tile = room length × width, minus the vanity footprint (most installers tile under a freestanding vanity but not a built-in one). Wall tile = wall perimeter × tile height, minus the doorway.
A standard 5 × 8 ft bathroom is 40 sq ft of floor. Tiling the walls to a 48" wainscot around a 23 ft perimeter adds about 92 sq ft — more than twice the floor. That is why wall tile budgets surprise people.
- Floor tile: 12x24 porcelain is the current default; smaller mosaic gives more grout lines and more slip resistance.
- Wall tile: 3x6 subway or 4x12 is standard; keep it lighter than the floor to make a small room feel bigger.
- Waste: use 12% in a bathroom rather than 10% — small rooms are almost all perimeter, so the cut ratio is high.
- Wet areas: the shower and tub surround need waterproofing behind the tile, not just cement board.
Next steps: price the job with the cost to tile a bathroom page, size the shower with the shower tile calculator, and measure up using how to measure for tile.
Frequently asked questions
How much tile do I need for a bathroom?
A standard 5x8 ft bathroom needs about 40 sq ft of floor tile, or 45 sq ft with waste. Adding a 48 inch wainscot around the walls adds roughly 90 sq ft more.
Do I tile under the vanity and toilet?
Always tile under the toilet — it is removed and reset anyway. Tile under a freestanding vanity; with a built-in vanity most installers tile up to the base to save material.
What size tile is best for a small bathroom?
Large format 12x24 on the floor reduces grout lines and makes a small room read bigger. Use mosaic only in the shower pan where slope and slip resistance matter.
How much waste should I add for a bathroom?
12%. Small rooms have a high perimeter-to-area ratio, so more of your tile ends up as cuts than in a big open floor.
