The best tile calculator is the one that matches your layout. Any tool can divide square footage by tile size; the difference shows up in the waste factor, whether it returns whole boxes, and whether it covers grout, thinset and labor. Retailer calculators apply a flat 10% waste to every job, which is wrong for anything but a straight grid.
It is accurate for a plain rectangular room in a straight layout. It applies a flat 10% waste factor regardless of pattern, so it under-orders for diagonal (15%) and herringbone (20%) layouts, and it does not estimate grout, thinset or labor.
