Tile Waste Factor Calculator

Waste is not wasted money — it is cut tile, broken tile, and the spare box that saves you when a tile cracks in year three. This calculator sets a realistic waste factor based on your pattern, room shape, and experience level.

How this calculator works

Start with a pattern baseline, then add for room complexity and inexperience. A 10% waste factor on a straight-laid 120 sq ft floor is 12 extra square feet — about one box.

  • Straight/grid: 10%
  • Offset/brick: 12%
  • Diagonal 45°: 15%
  • Herringbone: 20%

Large-format tile (24 in and up) breaks more in transit and handling, and mosaic sheets waste less because you can cut individual chips off a sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10% waste enough for tile?

For a straight layout in a simple rectangular room, yes. Add 5% for a first-time installer and 5–10% more for diagonal or herringbone patterns.

Why do I need a spare box after the job?

Tile is made in dye lots. A replacement box bought a year later will usually be a slightly different shade, so a leftover box from your own lot is the only true match.

Can I return unopened tile boxes?

Most big-box stores accept unopened, uncut boxes within their return window — keep the receipt and the box labels intact. Special-order tile is often non-returnable.
