How this calculator works
Area = width × length, in feet. Convert inches to a decimal first: 10 ft 6 in is 10.5 ft. Measure the widest points of the room, not the doorway.
What to subtract: permanent cabinets, tubs, islands, and any area under a fixed appliance. What not to subtract: small doorway notches and toe kicks — those add cuts, not savings.
For walls, multiply wall width by wall height and subtract windows and doors over about 10 sq ft. Anything smaller is absorbed by your waste factor.
Frequently asked questions
Do I subtract the area under kitchen cabinets?
Yes if the cabinets are already installed and staying. No if you are tiling the whole floor before cabinets go in, which is common in new builds and makes future remodels easier.
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
