How this calculator works
Big tiles cover fast but break and waste more: 12% minimum waste, 15% for offset patterns. Note that offset (running bond) patterns with large tile must be a 1/3 offset, never 1/2 — a half offset puts the high point of one tile's natural bow next to the low point of the next and guarantees lippage.
The leveling clip estimate assumes roughly 4 clips per tile. Your actual count depends on layout, so buy one more bag than the number suggests — leftover clips return easily.
Frequently asked questions
How flat does the floor need to be for large format tile?
The industry standard is no more than 1/8 inch of deviation over 10 feet. Most floors fail that test, which is why self-leveling underlayment and large-format jobs go together.
Why back-butter large tiles?
Tiles over 15 inches need near-100% mortar coverage, especially on floors. Back-buttering (a skim coat on the tile's back) fills the voids that a trowel alone leaves, preventing cracks and hollow spots.
Is large format tile more expensive to install?
Yes — expect labor quotes 20–40% higher than standard tile. It is heavier to handle, slower to set, and unforgiving of floor prep shortcuts.
